Riding with my hubby this spring & watching him plant corn reminded me again how much things have changed in farming over recent decades.  When we were first married, I would occasionally drive a tractor during harvest to help out with the grain cart.  I’ve enjoyed helping set up the planting and combine monitor software as these technologies have developed, but riding in the planter this spring alerted me to the fact that somewhere along the way I’ve missed a memo or two because I have no idea what all those monitors are for!   Honestly, I don’t really want to know what all of those monitors are for, but I find it so cool that farm technology has evolved into the complex and state of the art business that it is today, and right here under our noses in rural Iowa.  Most of these guys never had a computer class in school, but from years of hands on experience using available technology with their farm equipment, farmers of today have to be IT experts.  So next time you are tempted to think that all a farmer needs to do in that tractor is “turn the wheel” to lock on to GPS, think again!  Find a farmer friend and check it out yourself – you will be amazed!  Most of us at Hopkins Insurance have families who actively farm and know that farming is a complex business these days.  Thanks farmers for all that you do and for allowing our agency to be a part of this amazing complex experience called farming!
